The New York-based Tycoon Dog follows up its debut cassette release with its first CD, Ruff Cuts. Despite the title, the album is anything but rough, and the 11 originals show the band progressing nicely. The group takes a "classic" rock sensibility and fuses it with modern day hooks and grooves. Instrumentally, the band is economical and precise, although it still manages to infuse the songs with intricate instrumental embellishments. "Stream," with its nifty guitar work, and the spunky rock of "Son Of Mavis" are the most impressive cuts. The band shows its mellower side with the polished "Underground," which boasts alluring melody. Its more original sound is highlighted in the adventurous "Makes No Sense."
